BEFORE MYSTICHROME, THERE WAS MYSTIC.

RTR traces the lineage to the 1996 Mustang Cobra and its original Mystic finish that changes color in the light. Ford’s Special Vehicle Team returned to the idea for 2004 with a reformulated appearance package called Mystichrome. Ford color and trim leader Alan Eggly is credited in Ford’s launch material with driving the concept and naming the finish after its transitions between heat blued tones and chrome. DuPont chemists developed the finalized formula.

“The right details turn information into a story worth remembering.”

A COBRA COLOR BECOMES CULTURE.

The 2004 SVT Cobra made Mystichrome rare by design. RTR describes production as roughly 1,000 vehicles, helping turn the finish into Mustang folklore rather than an ordinary catalog color. Leather that changes color carried the visual effect into the cabin.

WHY RTR BROUGHT IT BACK.

RTR’s Extended Color Palette brought Mystichrome to Mustang RTR builds from 2024 onward, including Spec 2 and Spec 3 conversions. RTR says the program uses PPG automotive paints and finishes and involves extensive disassembly, painting and reassembly. The connection feels natural: RTR reshapes a Mustang through movement and attitude, while Mystichrome changes with every step around the car.

MOTOR CURRENT VERDICTThe finish connects a modern RTR build to one of Mustang’s most memorable visual legacies.
