A day with Ford’s 720 horsepower desert truck revealed something stranger than its speed: the 2026 F 150 Raptor R can feel enormous, outrageous and unexpectedly polished at the same time.
THE SOUND ARRIVES BEFORE YOUR BRAIN CATCHES UP.
The first thing the Raptor R gives you is immediacy. Even during relaxed driving, a measured press of the accelerator wakes the supercharged V8 with startling urgency. Ford rates the 5.2 liter engine at 720 horsepower and 640 pound feet of torque, but the numbers do not describe the physical moment: the truck gathers itself, pushes you firmly into the seat and turns an ordinary stretch of road into an event. Its selectable exhaust can make the truck comparatively subdued when the moment calls for restraint, then transform its voice into something closer to rolling thunder.

BIG TRUCK PRESENCE, SURPRISINGLY DELICATE CONTROL.
From the driver’s seat, there is no pretending this is a small vehicle. The hood is broad, the cabin feels substantial and the view can initially suggest something closer to an F-250. Yet it never felt clumsy. The driving position, large steering wheel and clear technology layout made the truck natural to settle into, while the available 360-degree camera was genuinely useful when judging its corners in tighter surroundings. That confidence mattered on both local streets and highway driving around Lakewood Ranch.

BAJA MODE TURNS THE ROAD INTO A SOFTER PLACE.
The suspension may be the Raptor R’s most impressive trick. Switching the suspension setting to Baja brought a remarkable softness to the ride, almost like the truck was floating over imperfect pavement. Ford’s dual valve FOX Live Valve system is engineered for serious off road control, but on this drive its everyday comfort was the revelation. For something so tall, wide and visually aggressive, the body stayed composed and the experience felt far more polished than the specification sheet suggests.

THE CABIN EARNS THE LETTER R.
Inside, the Raptor R combines the useful architecture of an F 150 with the details expected of the flagship. Carbon fiber trim, heavily bolstered seating surfaces and red R accents give the cabin a special identity without sacrificing the large screens, intuitive controls or commanding driving position that make the truck easy to live with. The steering wheel’s generous size felt right for the vehicle, and the technology never seemed added merely for display; it supported the driving experience.
THE BEST TEST WAS THE PASSENGER SEAT.
Some vehicles make their point only to the driver. This one did not. Both of my parents rode along, experienced the acceleration and settled into the suspension’s comfort, and their reactions echoed mine. My father already loved the Raptor R, so seeing it in the driveway was a moment of its own. My mother came away equally impressed by how a truck with this much presence could also feel so comfortable from the passenger seat.
WOULD I LIVE WITH ONE? WITHOUT HESITATION.
There was no meaningful flaw that changed the character of the day. The Raptor R is huge and requires the awareness any vehicle of this size deserves, but that is part of the brief rather than a surprise. Personally, I would happily use one every day. The only qualification is value: at manufacturer suggested retail pricing, its blend of speed, comfort, utility and personality makes far more sense to me than paying a large market adjustment. The truck is already dramatic enough without the purchase story becoming the loudest part.
SOUND AND PRESENCE,
CAPTURED IN THE MOMENT.
